(Does anyone know who the author of this excerpt is as well as what the central idea is) (The Coat)
[1] No one was around. No one would know if Steph took the coat, which was draped over a
chair by the exit to the library. No one would ever know, since she was hundreds of miles from
home, and she could tell her parents that all the kids in the program were given a coat like this.
She picked it up and saw that it was well made, probably costing three times anything she had in
her closet at home. Glancing around, she put it on; it fit well. She walked to the doors that led to
the library parking lot.
[2] From the lot, Steph could see the Greenstone train station a block away. She had come to the
library to spend some time before her train ride home. She might see a few other kids from the
program on the train, but Steph was the only student from her high school to have been chosen
for this trip, so she wasn't likely to bump into anyone who would ask questions about the coat.
The program - the Association of Leaders of Tomorrow (ALOT) - was for kids from poorer
communities who had shown what was called “promise." Steph was a good student and had
gotten an outstanding recommendation from a local hospital where she volunteered each week.
The patients enjoyed her company, and Steph, who was tall and moved with a quiet determined
grace, had been mistaken for a nurse on more than one occasion. The staff appreciated her, and
no one connected her with the petty thefts that had taken place recently - mostly cash stolen
from visitors who had carelessly left their wallets and purses in patients' rooms while they went
elsewhere in the building.
