Read the excerpt from “A Journey West.” Every disaster made my doubts stronger. But Rosetta just pulled herself up straight, set her shoulders, and said, “Well, I guess there’s nothing for it but to keep going. Let’s see what’s over the horizon, because it’ll be better than what’s here.”

Today, our milk cow fell in a gully. My doubts finally won out, and I didn’t think we would ever be able to build a good life in this barren, harsh, unforgiving land.
