Information The Gates

1
In New York City, February is not an especially colorful month. With the city still bundled in the grays and whites of winter, the sunny colors of spring are months away.

2
Yet in February of 2005, spring seemed to come early to the city. Central Park is an enormous park in the heart of New York City. On February 12, thousands of gates with golden-orange curtains changed the park's ordinary sidewalks into magical paths.

3
Two artists, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, created this work of outdoor art. Known as ,begin italics, The Gates, end italics,, it was made up of 7,503 gates. Each gate looked like a giant, open door with an orange curtain hanging partway down from the top. Each gate had two poles on opposite sides of the sidewalk. Pointing straight up, each pole was 16 feet high. A sideways bar connected the tops of the two poles. Attached to the bar was a piece of orange cloth. The cloth hung down to about 7 feet above the ground. The cloth was fastened only at the top, so it could billow in the breeze.

A photo shows a cold, gray winter day in Central Park. People are walking under a series of bright-orange cloth gates lining the path.

4
,begin italics, The Gates, end italics, was a free art exhibit. Anyone could come see it. Walking through the first gate, a person could look up at the bright curtain hanging just a few feet above his or her head. Continuing on the walk, a person would soon approach the next gate. The gates were spaced 12 feet apart. If anyone wanted to, they could walk through the gates for a long time. The gates covered 23 miles of the park's winding paths!

5
Large amounts of metal, plastic, and cloth were used to build the gates. The building materials included 5,290 tons of steel. The pieces of orange cloth used more than 116,000 miles of thread.

6
The artists designed the gates, but many workers helped make them. Seven U. S. factories made the metal and plastic parts for the gates. Workers in Germany made the pieces of cloth. When the materials were ready, 600 workers set up the gates in Central Park. Other helpers answered people's questions about this unusual work of art.

7
Many people loved ,begin italics, The Gates, end italics,. Some walkers said the orange cloth formed a golden ceiling when the wind blew. Some people said the gates looked like a golden river when viewed from a distance.

8
Christo and Jeanne-Claude said they designed ,begin italics, The Gates, end italics, for Central Park because they love the park. When their son was a little boy, they took him to the park every day to climb on the rocks.

9
It took 26 years to plan ,begin italics, The Gates, end italics,. But this work of outdoor art lasted only 16 days. Then the gates were removed. Most of the materials were recycled. People wondered why the artists made a work of art that was not meant to last. The artists replied that many good things in life do not last forever. Knowing that a good thing will not be around for long encourages people to see and appreciate the beauty while it lasts.

10
Even though it only lasted 16 days, many New Yorkers today remember that cold February when a golden river wound its way through Central Park.
