In The Canterbury Tales, the pardoner is a man who preaches to the masses about the vices of dishonesty and greed. However, he himself is both dishonest and greedy. The pardoner states that he sells fake relics to people, promising them miracles and salvation. He also preaches the same sermon constantly. This sentence explains the pardoner's purpose, which is to get their money in exchange of his sermons.
