Hakan heard the terrible avalanche before he saw it. Tender young trees were snapping and popping like sap in a campfire, while the sun-drenched alpine ridge, not half a mile above him, gave no suggestion of the tumult raging just below it. Calm down! Hakan told himself, trying to slow his thumping heart. Then he took a few deep breaths, and the cold air helped him think. Turning downhill now, he eyeballed the distance to a clump of solid, ancient trees, well removed from the path of the avalanche. Hakan pushed off toward it, barreling full-tilt across the field of white. Beneath him, the ground rumbled like an angry giant. Skiing as fast as he could, he kept his eyes on that group of trees. Seconds before the unforgiving torrent would have carried him away, the sweat-soaked skier reached the thicket and collapsed beneath its welcoming arms. 6 Which sentence from the story above utilizes the best sensory language?
