This shows that he felt like he had a very minimal amount of time with his father. Only having a small time to interact with his father made him want to have longer summers. In addition, Gilbert noticed that, “It was the end of August now, and lessons would soon begin again, and each day felt like something was drawing to a close” (line 266). Gilbert and his friends had just restored the handcar and had not decided where to take it yet, when it became apparent that summer was nearly over.
