Spiked foot, which grips the rock face better than any biological foot could. Other prosthetics can help people
excel at the sports they love, too.
Tap the detail that "the
experience" refers to.
Engineer Hugh Herr has made this his life's work. As a
teenager, Herr's first pair of prosthetics severely limited his
mobility. While those first prosthetics helped him walk,
rock climbing, the sport he is most passionate about, was
not possible. He knew he could make something better, so
he got to work
Before long, Herr realized his prosthetic designs were
actually stronger and more flexible than muscle and bone.
They were also lighter in weight, which was a big
advantage when he was pulling himself up a mountain. In
fact, while testing out the new designs, Herr was climbing
better and faster in his prosthetics than he ever had with
his biological legs. The experience changed the way he
thought about prosthetics and athletics.
