Ghost Ranch: Georgia O’Keeffe by Philip Gross

How far can you get
from the attics, ateliers,1 insect buzz
and shove of openings, private views?

Here, there’s nothing but studio,
5 inside, outside. Nothing.
But this face

with its hardening angles,
bank-clerk’s hair, has grown mannish
as a frontier woman’s. How far

10 can you get from iris throats,
swallow-you-in-one gulp mauves,
from night blacks, pollen sulphurs

that enfold you like a child
in mother’s wardrobe? And why
15 should it come as a surprise

if bare rock opens for her
like a flower, giving up colours
like scents to the sun—not like boom-

and-bust-in-one-day desert flora
20 but slowly, hard come by, the bloom
of the whole West? Oh, spare me

the poetry, her eyes say. Look
til you are what you look at:
landscape.
25 Gulches.
Going blind

as if from too much sun glare
those eyes narrow on some distance
I can’t grasp. I haven’t got that far.

Which two central ideas are developed throughout the poem?

Nature can be portrayed beautifully. Artists can transcend the obvious.

Art is appreciated with time. Natural lighting helps to determine interpretations.

Tranquility can be captured creatively. Artistic techniques are difficult to describe.

Landscape is inspiring to artists. Remote locations promote unusual insights.

Read the point that is being made and the illustration that follows it. point: gilgamesh is a courageous leader. illustration: enkidu is frightened of humbaba and wants to turn back, but he tells gilgamesh, "you go into the dreadful forest, you kill humbaba and win the fame.” which explanation best connects this illustration to the point being made? enkidu also tells gilgamesh that he “will return now to great-walled uruk” and that all men will know he has been a coward. although enkidu fears for his own life, he is thoughtless and does not necessarily fear for the lives of others. enkidu is deeply fearful of humbaba, and he strongly believes that gilgamesh has the courage and ability to defeat humbaba alone. this proves that enkidu does not believe that anyone can defeat humbaba, even if he thinks gilgamesh should at least try.
