Because meat is something dead, it is something that is eaten. It is not valued. Perhaps the life animal is but when it is dead meat. It isn't respected or highly valued. Because he is trying to give a vivid picture and he is trying to show the same feelings he feels or someone else feels for meat is the same as aliens.
