For this assignment, you will be rewriting one of the stories from this block but from a different character's point of view. Here are some ideas: The Yellow Wallpaper - could tell story from the point of view of the husband, the doctor, or the nanny. Winter Dreams - could tell story from the point of view of Judy, Irene, and Devlin. In Another Country - could tell story from the point of view of the major or the doctor. Once you have decided on a story and character, do some prewriting by jotting down some ideas - how does the story change, if you look at it from this character's point of view? What parts of the story would they not know? What different events might they tell about? How might their opinions or evaluation of the events change? You will not have to retell ALL of the story, but the overall story should be recognizable. In other words, the reader of the new story should be able to tell which story you are rewriting. You might also consider picking up at the end of the story and telling what happens next according to one of the characters. For example, you might write about what the husband in "The Yellow Wallpaper" does after he wakes up or what one of the characters mentioned in "In Another Country" does after the war. Keep in mind that you should include these elements of narrative writing: • characterization (descriptions of the characters, but be sure that you create characters that have the same traits that were defined in the original) • plot (remember that plot should have a conflict and a resolution to that conflict- even if you do not retell the entire story, you should still include these elements • setting - you can assume that a reader would already know the basic setting of the story, but how might the setting appear to this new character? What would they describe here? • theme - you should keep the basic theme of the original unless you think that this other character would learn something entirely different.
