The Headliner Based on the passage, which conclusion about Fritz
supported by the details of the story?
O 1. His optimism will eventually be defeated.
0 2. His persistence and creativity will take him far.
O 3. His beliefs about others are formed cautiously.
4. His approach to problems and setbacks needs
to change
1 "Extral Extral Read all about it! Marcello's Market starts summer hours!"
Fritz broadcast his sales pitch with as much enthusiasm as he could muster. He
had been standing at this corner for three hours and had only sold three
newspapers. Fritz looked upward and hoped for a good cloudburst to send folks
running to buy the rest of his newspapers. What difference does it make to me
if they buy the paper to read or to use as a disposable umbrella, he thought. A
sale is a sale.
2 When Fritz heard the church bells ring, he trudged down the block with his
overstuffed bag slung across his chest. Lately, the bag felt heavier on the way
back to the bridge than on the way out. Fritz nodded to the lady selling hot
pretzels at the entrance to the underpass. Mr. Gardini always complained about
her setting up near his stand, but Fritz believed his boss secretly appreciated
her location, after all, once a customer started eating one of those salty pretzels,
Mr. Gardini's stand was the closest place for them to drop another nickel on a
cold drink
3 Fritz's stomach churned when he came into spitting distance of the stand. It
was, as his father always said, time to face the music. Mr. Gardini's head poked
out around the wall. "I recognized the lacking of your shoes on the
cobblestones," he said. Then he looked into Fritz's bag and shook his head,
"Another bad day of sales," he said. "I'm sorry, Fritz, but I'm going to have to
start charging you for the papers you don't sell. They are no good to me at this
hour--the commuters have all gone home. I'll let it go again today, but this is
the last time; I have to pay for those papers whether you sell them or not."
