The setting of a Gothic work is very important and usually symbolic of the decline of something that was once good, beautiful, or thriving. The physical setting is essential to creating the emotional setting or mood of fear and anxiety. The physical setting may be characterized by:

an atmosphere of fear enhanced by the unknown

decaying scenery

a castle, mansion, or building that may be in ruins or haunted

underground passages, crypts, and catacombs

basements or attics

labyrinths, dark corridors, and winding stairs

darkness or shadows

a flickering light or a full moon

extreme landscapes

weather such as rain, fog, thunder, or wind

These locations and conditions create an emotional setting of suspense, dread, fear, and anticipation. Description is important and usually very vivid in suspenseful works. Authors use imagery that appeals to the five senses to draw the audience into the foreboding or frightening atmosphere.
