Elie's father did not eat his evening meal of bread and margarine because his daughter Elie had gorged hers down very fast. it was too small to satsify her. The food or should I say ration was not much. It was not enough (as far as Elie was concerned) to give one a full stomach.

Elie's father had corrected her asking her not to do so as the next day was not even certain. His advice of course had come too late. Elies ration of bread and margarine was already in Elie's stomach. Knowing her condition and that She still wasn't full, he sacrificed his meal by giving it to Elie.
