Jackie Joyner-Kersee is considered one of the greatest female athletes of all time. She competed in four different Olympic Games and won
six medals. As of 2014, she still holds the world record for the
women's heptathlon, which is an event made up of seven track and
field sports. She also holds the American record for the women's long
jump.
As a child, Jackie was athletically talented and worked hard to become
the best even though she had asthma. When she was 14, she saw the
Olympics on television and it became her dream to compete in the
Olympics herself.
In 1984, Jackie traveled to the Summer Olympics and came home
with a silver medal in the heptathlon. Four years later at the 1988
Games, Jackie won a gold medal in both the heptathlon and the long
jump. Her winning score in the heptathlon became the world record
for the event. However in 1992, Jacking won another gold medal in
the heptathlon and a bronze in the long jump.
At the 1996 Games, Jackie injured her right hamstring and was
unable to complete the heptathlon. However, she was able to compete
in the long jump and finished with the bronze medal in spite of her
injury.

Read the passage from sugar changed the world. for an african, whether you were sent to the caribbean or south america, you were now part of the sugar machine. and it did not much matter where your ship landed. you could be working the fertile fields of brazil or the hills of jamaica; the brutal cycle of making sugar was much the same. how does the use of the word machine support the authors' claim in this passage? its negative connotation indicates that enslaved people had to work like robots instead of human beings. its negative denotation indicates that some people preferred handmade sugar over factory-produced sugar. its positive connotation indicates that plantations ran efficiently and produced huge amounts of sugar. its positive denotation indicates that it was easier for enslaved people to make sugar with machines.
