Romanticism was a diverse movement of ideas that arose at the end of the 18th century as a result of pre-romanticism and neoclassicism, and which lasted until the middle of the 19th century. The term refers to an art current in which the individual's emotions were given greater weight than reason, general truths and long established rules and norms.  

Romanticism arose in response to the belief in reason, materialism and mechanical worldview that prevailed in culture during the Enlightenment. Contrary to the Enlightenment, which emphasized reason, the Romantics argued that emotion was at the heart of life. The study of the soul and metaphysical speculations were combined with a new view of the artist as a creative genius. The forms, which had been strictly bound and universal, were dissolved and a greater individualism was allowed. The importance of the intellect diminished in favor of the inner, subjective experience, imagination and feeling.
