“Several poems in this unit demonstrate characteristics of modernism. Modernism was a literary moment that grew out of people’s disillusionment with life and humanity after World War II. One of the characteristics of modernism was the highlighting of the alienation of the individual. This characteristic appears in William Carlos Williams poem “The Widow’s Lament in Springtime”. In this poem the widow lists off all the vivid colors of trees in bloom but then says, “but the grief in my heart is stronger than they for though they were my joy formerly, today I notice them and turn away forgetting” (poets. org). This poem shows the alienation of the individual because the widow is not able to connect with the beauty of the springtime around her. She is alone in her grief. This same modernist characteristic of isolation appears in the poem called “Mr. Flood’s Party”. In this poem an old man is on a hilltop looking down on his town. Missing part A. Missing part B. As can be seen from these examples, many of the poems in this unit of study exhibit many elements of modernism.
