4:Experiences like this can help us find direction. A year of national service would gibe us some time and experience to think about life beyond high school- before we decide what to do with the rest of our lives. Look at it this way. By the time we've graduated from high school, many of us have probably had part-time or summer jobs, but they're usually not jobs we want to do for the rest of our lives. And, whether we've. worked or not, we're probably not all sure about what kind of career we do want. Yet, to prepare for our future careers, many of us go right from high school to college or another type of high education.

5:In a national service program, we might work in a field that we decide we'd like to turn into a career. And even if some lines of work weren't for us, we'd be sure to come away with ideas about what we'd like to pursue. We'd then be better prepared to make decisions about how to invest our time and money in our after-high-school educations.
