King used this phrase when he decided to speak out against the Vietnam war, as he believed that this was an unjust war that caused the Vietnamese families a lot of suffering, due to the difference in military power between the USA and Vietnam. He reinforces in this speech, that the end of the war is not the responsibility of Vietnam and for that reason, he says "not wish to speak with Hanoi and the National Liberation Front." However, he believes that Americans should make this decision for the sake of innocent people and that is why he says he wants to speak to "my fellow Americans."
