The Ordering of Rooms I remember the mornings when she squeezed
fresh oranges into a golden glass
bruising oil from their skins
with her small, thick knuckles -
to this day my mouth is full of that
sweetness, its taste in the house
of a stranger calls up her love.

Mornings. As always, wakes at five.
I dream of him you know, she says.
10 : (My father, who outran her into light
these three years now.)
Prays quietly in the empty room,
blows thru the house opening windows.
That too about her I remember:
15 : a certain heat, the ease of her dancing.
My mother, I wish you every day
the kindness of the mornings,
its certainty, its promise.
Prayers for those gone
20 : before you to a joyful place.
