CREATE AND PRESENT
Write a Literary Analysis
In the poem “5 P. M., Tuesday, August 23, 2005,” Patricia Smith uses personification to describe the storm that will eventually become Hurricane Katrina. Write an essay to interpret the effect of the personification in the poem.
•Identify the storm’s human qualities. Remember that personification can refer to emotions as well as physical characteristics.
•Describe what each example of personification means and what it tells you about the speaker’s attitude or frame of mind.
•Write a topic sentence for each paragraph that states one theme or key idea of those conveyed through the personification, metaphor or simile. Support your interpretation with details from the poem.
•Follow the Example. (Marrying)
