(1) Ancient Egypt is known for the many deities it worshipped. (2) However, one pharaoh tried to change that. (3) Amenhotep IV, later called Akhenaton, made dramatic changes in Egyptian religion, changing it from a polytheistic faith to a monotheistic one with a single god. (4) Akenhaton dictated that only the sun god Aten would be worshipped in Egypt. (5) He ended the traditional Egyptian priesthood and named himself as Aten’s sole priest. (6) Despite these new laws, many commoners continued to worship the old gods. (7) When Akenhaton died, his religious changes died with him. (8) His son, Tutankhamen, restored the old ways.
