The Miller, His Son, and the Donkey: An Aesop Fable
(1) A Miller and his son were once going with their Donkey to market. As the two walked beside the Donkey, a countryman passed them and said, “You fools, what is a Donkey for but to ride upon?”

(2) So the Miller put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way. Soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said, “See that lazy youngster. He lets his father walk while he rides.”

(3) So the Miller ordered his Boy to get down, and he got on the Donkey himself. They had not gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other, “Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along.”

(4) Well, the Miller didn’t know what to do, but at last he put his Boy before him on the Donkey. By this time they had come to the town, and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them. The Miller stopped and asked what they were scoffing at. The men
said, “Aren’t you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor Donkey of yours?”

(5) The Miller and Boy got down and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought until at last they came up with an idea. They cut down a pole, tied the Donkey’s feet to it, and raised the pole with the Donkey to their shoulders. They went
along amid the laughter of all who met them until they came to a bridge. The Donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle the Donkey was hurt.

(6) “That will teach you,” said an old man who had followed them. “Please all, and you will please no one.”

Passage 2.

The Father and his Two Daughters: An Aesop Fable
(1) A man had two daughters, one married to a gardener and the other one married to a brick maker.

(2) After some time went by, the father went to visit the daughter who had married the gardener. He asked her how everything was. She said, “All things are prospering with me. My only wish is that there will be a heavy rainfall so that the plants will be
watered well.”

(3) Not long after that visit, the man went to visit the daughter who had married the brick maker and likewise asked her how everything was. She replied, “I want for nothing. My only wish is that the dry weather, with the sun shining hot and bright, will continue so that the bricks will dry.”

(4) He said to her, “Your sister wishes for rain, and you wish for dry weather. With which of you shall I place my wishes?”
