Part 2, Close Reading of a Poem For Part 2 of your Unit 2 Test, you will do a close reading of the poem, “Caged Bird,” by Maya Angelou. Be sure to follow the directions carefully and answer each of the three question.

1. Annotate the text with your own notes, either by using Word tools or printing it out and underlining, making notes in the margins, etc. When you are done, freewrite in the space about how the poem made you feel, anything that stood out to you as surprising or significant, or any questions you have. There are no ‘correct’ answers. Please free-write for at least five minutes on this prompt and

2. Look for patterns in the things you've noticed about the text—repetitions, contradictions, similarities. Finding patterns can help us find meaning in a text. What did you notice? Do any of these patterns help you identify a literary device? Write at least three to four sentences about a literary device you can identify in the text. How does it function to give meaning to the poem? .

3. Watch this video and write down the most impactful quote of one-three sentences spoken by Maya Angelou.

Caged Bird

A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
