Kate Chopin's early life Kate Chopin was born in 1850. Although she was the third of five children, she was the
only one to live past twenty-five. Kate's father was killed in a train accident when she
was five and a half, so she lived at home with her mother, grandmother, and great
grandmother, who were all widowed. She went to the Sacred Heart Academy in St.
Louis and was top of her class upon graduation.
