Read the following paragraph and underline four examples of clear, precise language. A cool stream trickles along the western slopes of the Great Smoky Mountains. Overhead, in a canopy of trees, red squirrels and martens play. The bucolic scene gives no hint of the invasion being waged by a tiny insect known as the hemlock woolly adelgid. This tiny aphid-like pest has inflicted massive damage to the hemlock trees in the area. Female adelgids secrete a white wool-like material on hemlock branches as they lay their eggs. When the eggs hatch, the young feed on the hemlock’s sap, which gradually kills the tree over a 4 to 15 year span.
