Explanation:

In this excerpt by Ida B. Wells, a glaring exposition of the lynching spurred by hate and racial discrimination of the Southern Whites against the African Americans was detailed.  Defaulters who were African Americans were punished by all possible mean ways while defaulters of White descent were left off the hook, or given very mild punishments.

An example was that of a man who harassed a young girl of African descent but was given only six months of jail time, received protection from the white liners and later became a detective himself. Wells encouraged African Americans to protect themselves.
