White frequently uses figurative language such as metaphors (direct comparison) and similes (com-
parisons with the use of like or as) in this essay—as
well as hyperbole (exaggeration of a point for em-
phasis). Search through the essay and locate as
many examples of each type of figurative language
as you can. (Suggestion: Highlight the metaphors,
similes, and so on, in your textbook.) Then write a
brief paragraph-possibly using figurative language
yourself-explaining what effect the use of figura-
tive language had on you as a reader.
