Restaveks are given to wealthy families to serve as their personal servants or slaves. The slaves do housework and care for the owners’ infants. The owners promise the parents of the restavek to take care of the child servants and send them to school. Most restaveks, however, tell stories of being forced to work all day and threatened or beaten if their work is not satisfactory.
