Swing, swing, swing, See! the sun is gone away; Swing, swing, swing, Gone to make a bright new day. Swing, swing, swing. I can see as up I go The poplars waving to and fro, I can see as I come down The lights are twinkling in the town, High and low, Fast and slow, Swing, swing, swing.

love for the joys of swinging  told from the perspective by a young speaker. 

either the cycle of the sun, the coming and going of the days, or it just turned night and we have to wait til it's another day.. also i think the person likes swing music

the problem is the last sentence, the first two have a basic subject+verb+object structure.

so, to give a proper balance to the structure, or better said, to give a parallel structure, we must write a basic s+v+o structure in all three sentences:

the hikers knew that the hike was six miles, that it usually required the entire day, and it would not be wise to start after 10: 00 a.m.

this quote could be referring to the death penalty. it's questioning the morality of sentencing murderers to death as a punishment, because it seems hypocritical. this quote seems to be arguing for non-lethal punishment for killers.
