Use numbers 1-10 to sequence the following events from Chapters 23 to 28 in the order in which they occur in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Deciding that the words “Number Two” referred to a room number, Huck and Tom conclude that Injun Joe is occupying Room Two in a tavern.
After digging for buried treasure and finding nothing, Tom proposes that they move their digging to the haunted house.
Muff Potter expresses his gratitude to the boys.
Tom seeks out Huck Finn and the two go off to dig for hidden treasure under a dead-tree.
The defense attorney calls Tom Sawyer to the witness stand.
With their eyes pressed to knotholes in the floor planks, they watch in anxiety as two men enter the haunted house. They immediately recognize one of the voices as belonging to Injun Joe.
With Huck waiting outside of the tavern, Tom sneaks into the tavern to explore the haunted room.
Injun Joe finds a box of buried treasure: an iron-bound box filled with gold coins that are suspected to belong to a gang who once were thought to have used the house as an old hideout.
Huck agrees to watch over the tavern in the night and sleep during the day in a hayloft.

Read this excerpt from "the light of gandhi's lamp" by hilary kromberg inglis, in which she describes driving to the police station where her sister is being detained. to avoid looking at the blackened windows at the top of the building and thinking about the history of who had died or been tortured there, i always looked instead at the little chinese restaurant on the opposite side of the road. how does this passage affect the text? it conveys, with great subtlety, the conflict she felt over having a sister who would break the law and end up in the custody of the police. it conveys, without any implied moral judgment, that those who fought against apartheid considered themselves to be soldiers in a just war. it conveys, with an extended metaphor, the idea that being detained by the police in this society was regarded as a badge of honor. it conveys, with direct language, the view held by many anti-apartheid activists that the police often acted in brutal and unlawful ways.
