Passage 1 Graphic Novels

Graphic novels became popular in the 1980s. A graphic novel is a type of long novel that combines images and words like a comic book. However, while a comic book tells a story in multiple parts over time, a graphic novel tells the entire story in one book. Graphic novels also have serious themes and amazing artwork. Graphic novels are not necessarily original pieces of work. Popular comic strips are usually redone as graphic novels.
Will Eisner is considered to be one of the first graphic novelists in America. Today, he is known as "the father of the graphic novel." He published his first graphic novel in 1978. The paper quality of the graphic novel is also different from that of comics. After Eisner published his books, the demand for better types of comics increased.

Passage 2

Novels

Novels are fictional works that use words to tell stories. Novels may have a few illustrations, but only to support the text. Reading novels helps improve the imagination of readers because they recreate scenes in their minds as they read the text. Reading novels also helps readers learn new words. Novels are a great form of entertainment for readers.
Graphic novels, on the other hand, are novels that have words but also use images to tell the story. Readers enjoy graphic novels because colorful graphics accompany few words. People who do not enjoy reading dense text may find graphic novels more enjoyable.

"the children's hour" by henry wadsworth longfellow between the dark and the daylight, when the night is beginning to lower, comes a pause in the day's occupations, that is known as the children's hour. i hear in the chamber above me the patter of little feet, the sound of a door that is opened, and voices soft and sweet. from my study i see in the lamplight, descending the broad hall stair, grave alice, and laughing allegra, and edith with golden hair. a whisper, and then a silence: yet i know by their merry eyes they are plotting and planning together to take me by surprise. a sudden rush from the stairway, a sudden raid from the hall! by three doors left unguarded they enter my castle wall! they climb up into my turret o'er the arms and back of my chair; if i try to escape, they surround me; they seem to be everywhere. they almost devour me with kisses, their arms about me entwine, till i think of the bishop of bingen in his mouse-tower on the rhine! do you think, o blue-eyed banditti, because you have scaled the wall, such an old mustache as i am is not a match for you all! i have you fast in my fortress, and will not let you depart, but put you down into the dungeon in the round-tower of my heart. and there will i keep you forever, yes, forever and a day, till the walls shall crumble to ruin, and moulder in dust away! which literary device does longfellow use most frequently in the poem? a. simile b. metaphor c. repetition d. personification
