Explanation:

Indirect speech allows us to communicate what another person has said without using speech marks and paraphrasing the content of what they said.

When reporting something that has been said in the present simple tense, the tense remains the same, and it´s the subject that changes.

On the other hand, to report sentences in the past tense, the tense changes to a further past. For example, a sentence in the simple past tense changes to past perfect in indirect speech.
