Harriet Tubman was a American abolitionist who was born in 1822. She was best known for her part in the underground railroad. While being a conductor for the underground railroad, she made 19 trips to the south and saved over 300 enslaved people. Later in life, she became a spy for the Union Army. She was also a woman's suffrage activist and became active in a woman's rights movement. Araminta Ross (Harriet Tubman) was born from enslaved parents in 1822. She was one of eight children. As a child she was “hired out” by her master to become a nursemaid for a slave owner named named Miss Susan. Miss Susan would give Harriet her baby to watch over while it slept. If it woke up crying Harriet would be whipped. Harriet's mother worked in the “Big house” as a cook. Her mother was named Harriet, but she was most known as “Rit.” Her father was named Ben Ross. Ben was highly respected because he was a good, hard-working slave. Harriet also had eight siblings, four brothers, four sisters. Around 1844 Harriet was married to a free black man named John Tubman. John wanted to buy Harriets freedom, but that was not possible. As soon as they were married Harriet changed her name and adopted her mothers. From there on, she was known as Harriet Tubman. When Harriet chose to escape the plantation, she asked her husband John to go with her. He refused and forbid her from going. He threatened to tell the master so she had to stay. Later that night when John was asleep Harriet started her journey. Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery in 1849 using the north route of the underground railroad. She was scared to go alone because she had narcolepsy from when she got accidentally hit in the head with a 2-pound weight by an overseer.Harriet was scared she would fall asleep and get caught by her owner who was planning to sell her. She went with her brothers to escape, but they eventually went back to the masters house and left her alone. Harriet tubman got her nickname Moses by abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison when she escaped from slavery, and was helping others do the same. “Moses” was a biblical leader, who attempted to lead the jews to the promised land. Harriet's mother would read the children small passages from the bible late at night when the master was asleep. The slaves believed Harriet was just as Moses was, all the slaves saw her as a strong leader. When Harriet was coming to save more slaves, they would whisper…”Moses is coming” and everyone new who it was. When Harriet came to the plantation the help others escape, they would creep out in the dark silently and make there grand escape. After Harriet Tubman completed her journeys on her own in 1894, she made possibly the biggest life decision of her life, she decided to go back to help other slaves escape. The slaves that joined her would stop at a escaped slave’s house and he would give them food and directions. The next stop would give them food, shoes and water. The slaves would follow the North Star to freedom. One of her biggest group of slaves had eleven people she had to take to Canada. The journey was hard and many wanted to turn back, but Harriet could not allow it. She pointed her gun at the slaves wanting to give up and said “You’ll be free or die a slave.” Harriet new that if they went back, they would have been forced to tell the master of the underground railroad and the helpers. n 1861, before the civil war fully began, Harriet conducted her last mission to rescue slaves. After the Civil War began, Harriet Tubman offered her nursing skills to the Union Army and began nursing the injured black soldiers. She was the first woman to lead a armed military operation in the brutal Civil War. The Civil War ended in May 9 1869 with the help of Harriet Tubman. That day, they declared victory!
