He left El Salvador and joined the United States Navy. During his service in the military, he became a U. S. citizen. After five years of serving in the Navy, Estelle's grandfather moved to Long Beach, California. Estelle's grandmother joined him in Long Beach, and they were married there. Her grandfather took a job as a night-shift security officer so that he could go to school during the day. He earned a bachelor's degree in social science. Her grandfather then began his career working for a nonprofit group that helped low-income families.
Estelle's grandfather spoke of his service in the Navy often. He talked about it to the children and teenagers he met through his job. He talked about it at home. It was her grandfather's stories about his time in the Navy that prompted her father to join the Navy. Now, Estelle's brother was about to begin an adventure of his own.
