Living Deep in the Woods (1) My sister Rebecca moved far north to Fairbanks, Alaska, after spending her childhood in the Arizona desert. (2) This meant that she had to drive her truck to the nearby town of Fox, pump water from a spring into large containers, and then drive back home. (3) Instead of a toilet in a bathroom, she used a wooden outhouse several yards away from the cabin. (4) My sister chose to live in a small cabin—with no running water—in the woods. (5) In Alaskan winters, the days were just as dark as the nights. (6) Although this life seemed unusually difficult, there were several unique benefits. (7) My sister could ski through the woods to her geology classes at University of Alaska. (8) She could also attach her dog to a harness that wrapped around her waist to enjoy the Scandinavian sport of skijoring. (9) Her dog would run along the snowy trails and pull her along on her skis!
