The story: A Dream Worth Remembering Ben slid into his homeroom seat before the bell rang and then slouched into a more comfortable position with an elbow on the desk and his head propped on his hand. With a sigh, he closed his eyes and pondered last night’s dream.

“All right, Ben, grab the fishing poles. I stocked the cooler with our lunches and the bucket with our bait, so let’s go hit the lake!”

“Okay, Dad. I’m planning to catch my biggest fish yet!” Ben carefully positioned the fishing rods in the bed of the truck and then slammed the door as he joined his dad.

With the humid summer weather now transitioning to fall, and a crisp, early morning breeze inviting them onto their boat, a gorgeous day greeted them as they arrived at their favorite fishing spot. Ben assisted his dad with moving their supplies from the truck to the boat and had to pick his way around a jumble of food wrappers and other fragments of trash someone had left behind.

“Look, Dad. Someone left garbage everywhere! Hang on while I throw it away. The trash can is down by those trees.” Quickly gathering the carelessly discarded litter, Ben darted to the trash receptacle and then back to his planned day of relaxation on the lake.

Light tapping on his shoulder pulled Ben away from the images of his dream and back into reality. Ben looked up to see Mrs. Caldwell’s gentle smile.

“Sorry to disturb you, Ben, but homeroom’s over. It is time for science class.”

Ben’s cheeks burned as he said, “I’m sorry I didn’t hear the bell, Mrs. Caldwell, but after that dream last night, I am more than eager for science!”

“Aren’t you studying water conservation in science now?”

“Yes, but that is exactly what my dream was about! It was an excellent dream at first when my dad and I went out to the ideal location for fishing, but then I noticed trash that I thought someone left after picnicking. When we maneuvered out on the lake, Dad and I saw garbage everywhere, and it was so disgusting that it wrecked our trip, and it made me furious!”

“Most people don’t remember their dreams. I’m sorry that the one you managed to remember is upsetting you, but it’s fortunate it was just a dream.”

“Except now it’s not just a dream to me. I didn’t comprehend how those first scraps of trash mattered. It frustrated me that someone left them, but I didn’t realize how important it was until I saw filth littering the lake. That garbage collected there because people didn’t dispose of waste correctly. We have been studying how water sources become polluted, but it didn’t seem to be a legitimate concern to me until I saw it for myself, even if it was a dream.”

“You better get to class, Ben, but I see why you remember your dream. Sometimes we remember a dream if it is about something that bothers us. You answered my question about how your dream was related to science class. Now I have another question for you to think about as you go; what will you do about your dream?”
