In your opinion, when are dreams for a better life beneficial, and when are they harmful?

basically the story is about a wife who really wants to be rich but is not and her friend is so she goes to a ball and asks her friend to borrow her diamond necklace. she loses the necklace and ends up buying a replacement. it takes her 10 years to pay it off. 10 yrs later she runs into the friend only to find out the replacement was worth 1000s more than the actual necklace
