Desiree acts normally. She loves her baby no matter the color. She accepts him. For a moment she thinks that armand felt the same for the baby, referring to Armand as the proudest father in the parish. She was wrong. With the passage of time, armand distances himself and demonstrates disappointment, by the color of the skin of the baby and to have discovered t desiree's heritage. He did not know she was half black. Armand was a member of a white and prestigious aristocrat family, at a time when segregation was strong in the United States and black slaves occupied the lowest role.

The consequence was that Armand abandoned Desiree and the baby, due to their disappointment. He threw everything on Desiree and the baby into a bonfire. The couple separated.
