Dear principal fallows,

(1) i am concerned about the school board’s decision to make every senior participate in 40 hours of community service in order to graduate. (2) although i believe that students should volunteer in their communities, i don’t agree that participation should be required. (3) many teenagers have jobs after school and on the weekends to them save money for college. (4) other students care for their younger siblings. (5) most students are involved in one or more school activities. (6) along with all of these responsibilities, students must still study for class. (7) i understand that the school board wants to show students the importance of volunteerism, but i think that students will find volunteer projects more rewarding when they are not forced to participate. (8) i hope that you will give this matter some thought and consider another course of action.

sincerely,

Read the excerpt from "politics and the english language" by george orwell. by this morning’s post i have received a pamphlet dealing with conditions in germany. the author tells me that he "felt impelled” to write it. i open it at random, and here is almost the first sentence that i see: "[the allies] have an opportunity not only of achieving a radical transformation of germany’s social and political structure in such a way as to avoid a nationalistic reaction in germany itself, but at the same time of laying the foundations of a cooperative and unified europe.” which statement is correct? orwell uses an example and statistical evidence in this excerpt. orwell uses an example and a quotation for evidence in this excerpt. orwell uses hypothetical and factual evidence in this excerpt. orwell uses hypothetical and statistical evidence in this excerpt.

This excerpt is from “the poet” by alfred, lord tennyson. the poem describes a poet's consciousness and perception. which three lines suggest the richness of a poet's thoughts? thus truth was multiplied on truth, [the world like one great garden show'd,] and thro' the wreaths of floating dark upcurl'd, rare sunrise flow'd. [and freedom rear'd in that august sunrise] her beautiful bold brow, when rites and forms before his burning eyes melted like snow. [there was no blood upon her maiden robes] sunn'd by those orient skies; but round about the circles of the globes of her keen eyes and in her raiment's hem was traced in flame wisdom, a name to shake [all evil dreams of power--a sacred name.] and when she spake, [her words did gather thunder as they ran,] and as the lightning to the thunder which follows it, riving the spirit of man, making earth wonder, so was their meaning to her words. no sword of wrath her right arm whirl'd, [ but one poor poet's scroll, and with 'his' word] she shook the world.
