in the story, "barrio boy" ernesto is learning english. ernesto learned how to properly say "butterfly", mrs. ryan is excited about this and announces it to the class. after these events, ernesto gets to have private lessons with mrs. ryan, in the closet, where he will learn more english words. as mrs. ryan reads, ernesto goes to correct her, saying that the english word should be pronounced different in spanish. mrs. ryan acknowledges him, to be polite, but does not take his advice. ernesto says he is in love with her and that he admires her "radiant, no-nonsense character" in the story "a days wait", schatz, the nine-year-old boy, has come down with the flu. his father wants to take care of him so he asks him to lie down. schatz denies that anything is wrong with him and he stubbornly does nothing about his illness. by the time the doctor comes by, there is evidence that he is sick. the boy still denies it. even though the boy denies that he is sick, his father takes good care of him by giving him his medicine and reading to him. eventually, the boy finds out he is sick and he is going to die, in which he doesn't. the father still takes good care of him. i think the boy likes that his father is caring for him and he feels comforted by those facts.
