There are many possible answers to this question depending on the specific groups that you are referring to. However, a group of people that is extremely popular with the American youth are celebrities.

Celebrities tend to work in the entertainment industry. They are usually dancers, singers and actors, although this can vary. The heroes of American youth often come from these occupations. The most likely reason is the fact that advertisement of celebrities is relentless in the modern world, and this can prove very significant for the minds of young people.
