In literature, hyperbole is a way of writing in an exaggerated manner used to emphasize, to add humor or to gain attention on something. It is common to use words or phrases that are obviously false, such as the ones that Oscar tells his friend. Oscar emphasizes how much he walked to get home, and how tiring and unpleasant it was by stating exaggerated facts, like "this is the hottest day in the history of the world", if this statement were true, he would not make it out alive to his home.
