In the story, “The Lottery,” it is Tessie Hutchinson (Mrs. Hutchinson) who represents a new idea that is in conflict with the society within which the lottery is taking place. It was actually Tessie who is supposed to be the victim of the lottery, but she protests (as can be seen in the excerpt you provided) that the lottery “wasn’t fair” and should be done over because this would most likely remove her as the unlucky winner/victim. The new idea suggested is that the lottery should be done over, and this is what was in conflict with the society’s expectation—that the person selected should be the one to die.
