In this excerpt from The Decameron, the character of Dioneo is telling the story of the Marquis de Saluzzo, who married the daughter of a farmer and had two children with her, but he made her believe that he had killed them both, and expelled her from the house. Since Dioneo has previously described the Marquis as certainly not magnificent and "a piece of mad folly" and is now counseling the other characters not to imitate him, even though at the end something good came his way (his wife returned home and he honored her by granting her the title of Marchioness), it is possible to assert that the tone of the author is cautionary.
