    Not long after Shelby received the heliograph, her interest  in the solar system began to incline. She sent a telegram to her astronomy professor, asking why she was the chosen student to study the heliograph. Her professor responded, "I sent you the heliograph for you to learn your liberty.You're free to become what you want, you dont have to follow your friends, and what they're wants and wishes are! A female astronomer at this university is unheard of! That heliograph is due on my desk by next Monday." Shelby realized that her professor was right, she had to be what she wanted, not her friends. She received an A- on her heliograph, bringing her grades up for the semester.
