The burning of the church is such a significant moment for Okonkwo because it had been his idea. Ever since the white men had come Okonkwo had disliked them. Okonkwo thought that the Christians were effeminate and he wanted them to be gone. Okonkwo tried to convince his clan that they should kill the missionaries but could not get them to do so, they ended up agreeing to burn down the church. When the church had been burnt down this angered the white men and they captured the villiage leaders. Befor the leaders had been captured Okonkwo had been almost happy with the course of action that the clan had taken because he had thought they were becomming too weak. "For the first time in many years Okonkwo had a feeling that was akin to happiness. The times which had altered so unaccountably during his exile seemed to be coming round again. The clan which had turned false on him appeared to be making ammends." This is how Okonkwo felt after the church was turned to ashes.
