the sound of horses' hooves hitting cracked earth reverberated around the walls of the canyon. a lone eagle swooped overhead as the band of cowboys galloped along the narrow stream cutting through the landscape. during the rainy season, the stream would become a thundering river, sweeping the rocks and tumbleweeds away in a harsh current. but now, with the stream nearly dry, the men on horses wondered whether it would even provide them with enough water for their journey.
