Throughout the poem, the lines "Do not go gentle into that good night" and "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" are repeated. The "good night" and "dying of the light" are different ways of saying death. The narrator is telling the audience to fight death, rage against it, don't go gentle.

The poem is written in the form of a Villanelle with a specific rhyme scheme and repeating line pattern. Villanelle's also have a structure to it's overall content. The subject of the poem increases in intensity as the poem goes on. In this poem, the speaker talks about why different types of people fight death. In the last stanza, the speaker changes from talking about others to speaking directly to his father and begging his father to fight death.
