In "I, Too," Langston Hughes is clearly in discussion with the prior ballad, Walt Whitman's "I Hear America Singing." The two artists achieve to some degree various conclusions because of these inquiries.  

While the two sonnets reflect on the American personality, distinctive verifiable settings and various aspects of character result in various thoughts regarding who is an American. Whitman's vision is expansive, and Hughes' is increasingly explicit; Hughes' poem proposes, however, that even in its broadness, Whitman's vision is limited.
