Henry David Thoreau decided to go to the woods on his own in order to figure out his purpose in life. He believed that society could sometimes distract us in a way that prevented us from seeing the most important things in life. While in the woods, Thoreau decided to engage in self-reflection in order to better understand himself, his desires and his motivations. He retold his experience in the book Walden.
